The WAEC and NECO SSCE Examinations are senior secondary school examinations required for admission to tertiary institutions such as Monotechnics, Polytechnics, Colleges of Educations and the University in Nigeria. The WAEC SSCE as a post-secondary school requirement has a wider coverage including most of the English-speaking West African countries.

Generally, students sit for 7 to 9 subject papers on the WAEC and NECO SSCE and are required to have credit passes in at least 5 subjects including Mathematics and English Language for admission to Universities, though other tertiary institution requirements may vary a little. Subjects offered under the WAEC and NECO SSCE include Mathematics, Further Mathematics, English Language, English Literature, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, Economics, Government, Commerce, Financial Accounting, Christian Religion Knowledge (CRK) and Islamic Religion Knowledge (IRK). The examination for each subject is generally made up of objective (multiple choice) questions and theory questions (requiring written subject essays, calculations, diagramming, etc). The science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Biology may also have alternatives to practicals which are designed to test practical knowledge of experiments in a written test.

WAEC Examinations Overview & Information

WAEC (West Africa Examinations Council) administers the WAEC SSCE examinations across West African countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Gambia and Sierra Leone. The Council conducts several international and national examinations in all member countries except Nigeria where it has shed all but one of its examinations, The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC SSCE) for school candidates in May/June and private candidates in November/December.

NECO Examinations Overview & Information

NECO (National Examinations Council) administers the NECO SSCE examinations in Nigeria in competition with and as an alternative to the WAEC SSCE. The NECO SSCE is conducted for school candidates in May/June while the one for private candidates is conducted in November/December.
